is situated in an area that was once part of the historic
Western Electric Company, which, more than a century ago, was
the largest electrical manufacturer in the United States.
In 1872, Western Union, a leader in telegraphs, invested in a
Chicago manufacturing enterprise, the Western Electric
Manufacturing Company. Western Electric had a complex of
buildings that was responsible for the manufacture of
switchboards, call boxes, fire alarms, and related supplies.
During World War II, Western Electric provided nearly half of
the country's radar needs. Army ground and air forces, Navy
ships, submarines, and planes, and Marine landing forces all
employed Western Electric radar systems. Radar comprised about
50 percent of the company's war production--the rest going to
radio and wire communications equipment designed for war
purposes.
In the 1950's the Congress Expressway was built linking the
western suburbs to Chicago.
In the late 1990's Gotham Lofts Chicago becomes a reality and a
new chapter in its history is born. |

“Midwest Store” to great fanfare and celebration. And for good

department store outside of the Loop. It was certainly the
finest, as well: an architectural triumph that became a point of
great pride for what was then a tightly knit residential

building prepares to reemerge as the hottest new residence in

Located just northwest of the Loop in the Fulton River
District, Randolph Place Residences boasts a sure-footing in the
history books of this former manufacturing area. The famous
turn-of-the-century Chicago City Planner, Daniel Burnham,
originally designed and built the building in 1917, shortly
after completing its sister tower immediately to the south at
111 N. Canal (currently known as River Center). Burnham is
credited with having built the first Chicago high-rise office
building as well as designing the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.
He is still known today as the man who envisioned a city
complete with public lakefront parks for its citizens.
Daniel Burnham’s riverfront design at 165 N. Canal Street was
originally known as the Butler Brothers Warehouse. In the years
that followed, the building housed a variety of manufacturing
warehouses and offices, such as telephone company offices, the
Canadian Northwest (CNW) railroad offices, and a catalogue
warehouse.
The conversion of this 16-story building into loft-style
condominiums was completed in 1999. The exterior brick facades,
Tuscan arcading, and 10-foot plus interior ceiling heights were
preserved during the building’s conversion. Many amenities were
added to the residences, including new oak hardwood floors,
balconies, and ventless gas fireplaces.
As the surrounding neighborhood evolves and grows, Randolph
Place Residences continues to hold its unique position as both a
reminder of the forgotten past of the formerly industrial area
as well as an example of the neighborhood’s current trend of
sophisticated, urban housing.

A true loft
for Chicago is a conversion of a vintage
factory or warehouse, having a harder
edge of either concrete construction, or
"mill" construction of exposed brick and
original wood posts, beams and floors.
Ceilings should be over ten feet high at
least. This is increasingly very
important for loft purchasers, as
developers are now building condos with
slightly higher ceilings than in the
past. It is the height that helps give a
loft the feeling of air and space.
Larger windows and open concept layouts
also help. Ceilings are unfinished and
pipes and heating ducts are exposed. Do
not expect to find a 1,000 square foot
loft divided up into two bedrooms and a
den. It will much more likely have a
kitchen and a bathroom with the rest of
the space left as one large open room,
which you can work with and use
according to your own functions and
needs. Some people think a loft means
you have a second mezzanine level
overlooking the floor below, but this is
simply one style of loft.
Beware of
another type of loft -- the newly
constructed loft (or "soft lofts"),
which are for the most part "Condos With
High Ceilings", and are examples of
Chicago condo developers trying to cash
in on the popularity of lofts. They are
still great units, just not "true"
